After months of waiting, Charlie McDonough finally has his heart.

The Needham teenager underwent an 11-hour organ transplant Feb. 1 and is recovering at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he has lived for the last two months while waiting for a suitable organ.

“Charlie’s surgery went really well,” said Jane Kellogg, Charlie’s mother, on Feb. 3. “We’re just sort of recuperating from being up all night.”

McDonough, 19, was born with a congenital heart defect and has survived on less-than-normal oxygen levels his whole life. Doctors suggested the family consider a transplant after McDonough experienced heart failure last may.
