Marvell Library Book Club had a delightful meeting on July 18 with 17 present, including three guests. THE SWEETNESS OF FORGETTING by Kristin Harmel is the book we discussed and is the book that made Kristin Harmel an international success.
Set in Paris, France, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, the story covers four generations of one family, who share their history, beginning during World War II. This is a complicated story of a family who owned French bakeries and had many secrets. The granddaughter Hope is sent to Paris to uncover a 70-year-old mystery of their family, going back to the Holocaust.
Pam Culp, our facilitator for the book, made four treats from our book's recipes - Star Pie, Cape Codder Cookies, Lemon-Grape Cheesecake, and Anise and Fennel Cookies.
Ann Porter made some "ethnic' sandwiches from her family's recipes from many years ago -- Summer Sandwiches from an old friend, Party Pimento Sandwiches from her maternal grandmother, and Brown Bread from her great grandmother who always won 1st prize at the Washington County Fair. Everyone present relished the special and delicious refreshments very much.
The ladies thoroughly enjoyed this book of historical fiction and would highly recommend it. You may check out a copy of the book from Phillips County Library and from Marvell Library.
