The Phillips County Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Helena-West Helena Mayor, Kevin Smith, Phillips County Judge, Clark Hall and Marvell Mayor, Lee Guest have scheduled a county wide cleanup day in Phillips County. The event will take place on Saturday, March 9th, 9 am to 12 pm and will include trash pickup and recycling.
Helena native and Tour da Delta director, Chris Schaffhauser, had started a grass roots effort to clean up the community in the spring. “My wife Lori and I had recently taken a bike trip around Helena-West Helena and were startled at the amount of litter and debris all along the trails. That is my “hot button” issue so I decided to try to get a group together to work on cleaning things up.” At the same time, Phillips County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Alana Pinchback, was working on bringing the “Keep Arkansas Beautiful” program to Phillips County for some time in March. The two friends decided to coordinate their efforts and created the “Phillips County Community Cleanup”.
Keep Arkansas Beautiful will provide gloves, vests, trash bags and other supplies for the cleanup crews. The Phillips County Chamber of Commerce, 111 Hickory Hills Drive in Helena, will act as the event headquarters. Churches, civic clubs, youth groups, businesses and any other groups are encouraged to create teams to tackle certain areas within the county. Registration is available at the chamber office. The event will kick off with a coffee and donut “Pep Rally” at 8:30 am on March 9th before the teams head out to clean.
“We have some wonderful citizens in this county who are eager to make our community shine for visitors and residents alike! If you are interested in making our community better, volunteering for beautification projects are a great place to start!” said Alana Pinchback.
