LAKEVIEW- In a game played at the old C. V. White High School Gymnasium while the Marvell High Gym is being renovated, the Marvell Mustangs (6-2, 5-1) took down the Bradford Eagles (4-10, 4-1) 70-38.

Marvell, which sits tied with Augusta atop the 1A-6 Conference standings, got off to a slow start. At the end of the first quarter, the traditionally high-scoring Mustangs only had a 10-6 lead.

Bradford, deliberately trying to slow down the tempo, kept the Mustangs in a half-court game throughout the first half. By the time the game reached the intermission, Marvell led 20-15.

After Coach Galdric Thrower brought his team out for the second half, Marvell forced the tempo. With full-court pressure forcing turnovers and allowing the Mustangs to run the floor, the Mustangs exploded for 50 points in the second half, invoked the mercy rule in the 4th period and won in blowout fashion.

Coach Thrower said, “We allowed them (Bradford) to dictate the tempo in the first half. We were walking the ball up the floor and playing a half-court game which isn’t what we do.”

He continued, “I was pleased with our performance in the second half.” DeAndrea Arnold led Marvell with 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Kentris Smith added 14 points. Orentaia Johnson logged 12 points to round out the Mustangs in double figures.

In women’s action, the Fillies (1-6, 1-4) fell to the Lady Eagles (7-6, 4-0) by a scored of 58-15 in a game controlled by Bradford from start to finish.

The Mustangs return to the hardwood on Thursday at 6:00 pm in the HWH Invitational when they take on the Bulldogs of Star City at the CHS Gymnasium. The Fillies are off until after the holiday break.
