HELENA-WEST HELENA-After being held scoreless in the first half and trailing DeWitt (3-2, 0-2), the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (4-1, 1-1) rattled off 24 consecutive points in the second half to defeat the Dragons 24-2 at Cad Polk Stadium.
After trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Cougars took the opening possession of the second half 70 yards on ten plays. Deamonte Oliver plunged in from two-yards out for the score. The try for two failed and Helena-West Helena had its first lead of the game at 6-2 with 6:32 to go in the third.
After forcing a punt on the next possession, the Cougars needed only three plays to cover 42 yards. John Oliver ran it in from the 5-yard line with 2:38 left in the quarter. After the two-point try was unsuccessful, the Cougars led 12-2.
On the first play of the ensuing possession, Helena-West Helena's Joseph Robinson grabbed an errant Dragon pass and returned it to the 16-yard line. Four running plays later, Oliver scored on a 4-yard run with 0:48 to go in the third. The try for two failed again to make the score 18-2.
After forcing DeWitt to turn the ball over on downs at the 10-yard line, the Cougars went 90 yards on seven running plays. Yarvarious Frazier scored on a 54-yard run off of left tackle to end the scoring as the try for two failed with 3:26 remaining in the game, leaving the score 24-2.
DeWitt's only points came with 1:44 to go in the first half when the Dragons threw an interception in the end zone and it was ruled that the Cougars took the ball out and then were tackled back in the end zone for a safety.
