When the spring flowers bloomed on the thirtieth day of March 1919, God in his infinite wisdom decided that an angel, Lela Mae Gray Dixon, needed to reside on earth. He wrapped her in love, kindness, grace, and warmth.
Her journey began in a rural town, Red Fork, Arkansas. She was the loving daughter of the late Mrs. Zola Floyd and Mr. Mark Gray and adored by her younger sisters — Alice and Annie Lee. Lela accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Elaine, Arkansas under the tutelage of the late Reverend F. A. Simpson.
In 1983, she moved to Memphis, Tennessee as a caretaker for her aunts and uncle. She continued her walk with Christ at the Hunter Avenue Baptist Church. Lela met the late Joseph Dixon who became the love of her life. They began their family and she was a devoted wife and mother to four children during their union — Herman Lee, Joseph Jr., Mary Alice, and Robert. Her family continued to grow. She shared her love with six more blessings — Earl, Willie, Frank, Zeola, and Kenneth. Additionally, Edward Charles and Julia Faye were children known affectionately as her own. Lela’s family continued to grow and grow. She became Mrs. Sister, Mom, and Gran to her greatest treasures —5 daughter-in-laws (Nora, Rosie Lee, Ella Jean, Lorene, and Mattie), one son-in-law (William), 42 grandchildren, 81 great grandchildren, 49 great-great grandchildren, and five great-great-great grandchildren in addition to several nieces and nephews.
Gran loved fishing, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity, and maintained her trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. She will always be remembered for her inspiring positivity and her beautiful, nurturing soul. Gran’s legacy along with the warmth of her wings will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and husband as well as her sisters. Herman Lee (Nora), Joseph, Jr., Robert, Edward Charles (Mary Ann) also went home to be with the Lord before her.
It has pleased, Almighty God, the great and most omnipotent dispensers of all our joys and sorrow, to take from our fraternal embrace, Sister Lela Mae Dixon.
As the the Earth was washed and cleansed by the dewy tears of summer, Lela Mae succumbed this life on late Saturday night, the seventh day of July 2018.
