The Helena-West Helena City Council approved three permits and talked about grass mowing issues during their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at City Hall.
Helena-West Helena Mayor Jay Hollowell brought the meeting to order just after 6 p.m.
Mayor Hollowell reminded the council members of the upcoming election filing dates, which are July 27 - August 17, 2018. The council discussed a mediation court case date possibility of Thursday June 26th, and tentatively set July 17th as the only City Council meeting to be held in the month of July, due to other events.
The City Council was presented with three Event Permit requests to consider.
The Southern Soul Super Summerfest scheduled for July 7, 2018 was presented by Ms. Barbara Marshall and Mr. Derek Marshall. They told the City Council Board members the reason for this fundraiser was to be able to assist families who have no way to pay for funeral expenses. The Soul Super Summeriest application for an event permit was approved.
The “Camp Albert” event permit request was presented by Ms. Viola Turner and Ms. Janice Williams. The event is set to be held June 23, 2018. Camp Albert begins with a parade down Cherry Street at 9 a.m., with other events scheduled to be held in the North Helena Park from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Camp Albert event permit application was approved.
The Council also approved the event permit application for “Tour da Delta Bike Ride” which is under the leadership of Chris Schaffhauser and Fred Stephens. Councilman John Huff praised these two men for their efforts in the Bikes for Kids program and stated that they should be recognized for their contributions to the community. The “Tour da Delta Bike Ride,” scheduled for October 6, 2018 , event permit application was approved.
After a discussion, which included a pair of City Councilmen offering to volunteer to mow grass using the cities equipment, the meeting adjourned.
