A Van Buren man reported being robbed in Fort Smith on Saturday, according to a report from the Fort Smith Police Department.
Brent Jeremy Tobias-Arriola of the Fort Smith Police Department was dispatched to Yeager Ace Hardware at 2619 Rogers Ave. at about 9:10 a.m. Saturday in reference to a robbery. He talked to the caller, a Van Buren man, who said he was walking around the 800 block of South 20th Street when he was jumped by four men and robbed.
The man reported he arrived at a residence in the 800 block of South 20th Street at about 4 a.m. after he took a taxi to that location to hang out with a friend. He said at about 8:40 a.m., he was hanging out with his friend, a woman, and was going to walk with her to the tobacco shop at 2000 Rogers Ave., Discount Tobacco. The woman decided to stay, and when the man took 10 steps away from the residence, he was jumped by four men.
The man reported one of the men ripped his shirt off. He also reported he did not have his wallet and does not remember where he left it and thinks someone took it out while he was being beaten. Tobias-Arriola said the man's mouth was swollen, his shoulders were red, one of his thumbs was scraped and the inside of his mouth was bloody.
The man said he believes his female friend might have set him up, but he was not sure since it happened so quickly and because she decided not to walk with him at the last second. Several officers were in the area of 800 S. 20th St. searching, but they were unable to locate the residence the man stated he had just left or the suspects.
Tobias-Arriola said he transported the Van Buren man to South 20th Street, where he was able to show him the residence he had just left. It was a residence in the 600 block of South 20th Street. Tobias-Arriola and another Fort Smith police officer, Angus Bradford, went to the residence and talked to a man who said he was the only one at the residence. This man said he knew the woman, but she was not there anymore and had left in an unknown direction a while ago. The residence was checked and there was no one inside.
