Betty Jean Hill-Hunt was born the ninth of 12 children to the late Louise Hill in Glendora, Mississippi on Sept. 29, 1955.  She passed peacefully to her Heavenly reward on Thursday, April 14, 2016 in her home in Helena-West Helena.

Betty accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age at Persimmon Grove Missionary Baptist Church and there started a journey that would shape her life and the lives of her family, friends and students for generations to come.

Betty’s mother and grandmother encouraged her to “get an education and try to be somebody.” She was obedient and graduated from Coahoma Junior College and Alcorn State University with degrees in education.  She further enhanced her education by taking advanced classes at Mississippi Valley State University and The University of Central Arkansas.

Betty moved to Elaine during the summer of 1978 and taught there for 22 years before transferring to West Helena, where she taught for 15 years before retiring in May 2015.  She deeply loved all of her students and wanted the very best for them.  In 1994, she met and fell deeply in love with Eugene Hunt. They married July 27, 1996.  They enjoyed traveling and spending time with family.

Betty leaves to cherish her beautiful spirit, her husband Eugene; five children; mother-in-law, Mary Hurtz of Illinois; two brothers, Willie (Arcola) and John (Velma), both of Glendora; an adopted brother, Melvin (Veronica) of Glendora; six sisters, Luebirda of Chicago, Illinois, Jessie of Greenwood, Mississippi, Ora, Shelly, Doris, and Derra, all of Glendora; a sister-in-law, Geneva Hill of Webb, Mississippi; an uncle, Mathis Wilchie of Memphis, Tennessee; an aunt, Cora Cole, of Glendora; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
