The Marvell Academy Eagles got the 2015 gridiron season off on the right foot Friday night with a 14-12 opening night victory over the visiting Franklin Academy Cougars.

The Marvell Academy Eagles got the 2015 gridiron season off on the right foot Friday night with a 14-12 opening night victory over the visiting Franklin Academy Cougars.

Franklin was the first on the scoreboard with 3:42 left in the first quarter as a 16-yard run put the Cougars ahead 6-0 following a failed 2-point conversion.

But the Eagles weren’t far behind. On the very next series, Marvell's Caleb Gannon slipped into the end zone with 1:39 left in the opening quarter from 21 yards out.

Following a successful 2-point attempt, the Eagles grabbed the lead, 8-6.

The first play from scrimmage in the second half sent Marvell's Morgan Steeland scampering 49 yards for 6 additional points. Following a failed 2- point attempt, the Eagles were able to secure a lead of 14-6 with 9:50 left in the 3rd quarter.

The next series saw the Franklin Cougars narrow the lead to 14-12 with 5:40 left in the 3rd. The Cougars failed to tie the score on a botched 2-point conversion attempt.

The teams played a scoreless fourth quarter.

Marvell Academy Head Coach Ben Durham told The Helena World, "I was very happy the way that our team competed."  Durham continued,"Franklin played in the state championship two years ago and they have a really good team."

Durham noted, "Defensively we played really well for a first game."

Morgan Steeland had 7 tackles and a sack. Luke Schaufhauser had 6 tackles.Jacob Cox netted 7 tackles and Bud Parker had 6 tackles.

Durham related, "Offensively I thought we were really sloppy at times. We have big play potential but did not show it."  

Caleb Gannon had 7 carries for 92 yards and a TD.  Morgan Steeland had 9 carries for 123 yards and 1 TD.

Marvell Academy hits the road this Friday night as they travel to Rolling Fork, Mississippi to take on Sharkey Academy Confederates. Sharkey Academy is coming off a 64-48 win over Hebron Christian Friday night.
