Mr. Willie C. Cheatam was born to the late Bee and Charity Cheatam on February 10, 1924 in Macon Mississippi. He passed away on August 6, 2015 surrounded by family and friends.

He later moved to Helena-West Helena where he was baptized at an early age.  Later he rededicated his life and remained an active member of Allen Temple A.M.E. Church in Helena-West Helena until his health failed.

In February 1949 he was married to Cleinix Cheatam for 67 years.  They were blessed with eight children – five boys and three girls.

At the age of 20 he became employed at Chicago Mill until it closed.  He then worked at Mid-Delta until his health failed.

He was quiet the gentleman who loved sitting outside talking with friends, working in the garden, and playing with his grandchildren.  Everyone who knew him will tell you he was a sharp dresser.

Preceding him in death were two sons, Gene Young and Benart Cheatam, a granddaughter, Kisha Young, a grandson, Reginald Van Harrell, three brothers, John D. and Jordan Cheatam, Joe Taylor and two sisters, Sadie Spann and Mattie Grant.

He leaves his cherished wife, Cleinix Cheatam; sons, Robert “Beaver” (Alice) Cheatam of Helena-West Helena, Robert Lee “Bob” (Betty) Cheatam of Idabell, Oklahoma, Oliver (Cherylene) Cheatam of Chicago Illinois; daughters, Willie Mae Waldron, Shirley Pope, Sarah Smith of Helena-West Helena and Delores Parker of Little Rock; two sisters, Rosie Spann of Macon, Mississippi and Maggie Smith of Marietta Georgia; a brother-in-law, John Young of North Chicago Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Vera Cooper of Helena-West Helena and Bessie Cheatam of Macon; a daughter-in-law, LaWania Cheatam of Helena-West Helena; a special cousin, Earnest Lee Page; 28 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; 16 great great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Mr. Cheatam’s visitation will be 1 to 6 p.m., Friday, August 14 in the Jackson – Highley Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, August 15 at New Haven Baptist Church in Helena- West Helena.  Interment will follow in Jackson Memorial Cemetery at Southland.
