An argument at a local motel turned into a shootout in which two men were shot multiple times according to the Helena-West Helena Police Department reports.

Police officers were dispatched to the Sands Motel Tuesday morning where they discovered the two victims inside one of the motel rooms. H-WHPD Chief Virgil Green reported in a press release that two witnesses told investigators that several black males arrived at the motel and an argument ensued between those inside the room and others outside.

Investigators were told that both groups began to shoot at each other. The two men inside the motel room were apparently the only ones struck by the gunfire. Witnesses told police that at least four black males fled the area in a white vehicle. It is not known if any of them were wounded during the shootout.

Green reported that both victims were flown to area hospitals in reportedly serious condition.

Investigators recovered several handguns at the scene. According to Green, the preliminary investigation revealed that stray bullets traveled through about three separate motel rooms.

“It was very lucky that those rooms were empty,” stated Green. “If not we probably would have had even more victims.”

The handguns involved in the shooting were discovered in a black Mercedes on the motel’s parking lot. Green also reported that large amounts of drugs were found in the motel room and the vehicle.

At press time, information concerning the suspects was not available. The names of the victims are not being released at this time.

“We believe the suspects in the white Buick are armed and should be considered dangerous,” said Green. “If anyone has any information about this incident, please contact the Helena-West Helena Police Department at (870) 572-3441.
