Veteran Helena-West Helena Police officer Lt. Dennis Cox is listed in critical condition in a Memphis hospital after a vehicle struck him late Monday evening according to Police Chief Virgil Green.

Green reported that the incident occurred on Plaza Avenue around 9 p.m. Cox had just recovered a stolen vehicle out of Little Rock.

A local wrecker had been called to the scene to tow away the vehicle. Cox was reportedly standing beside the wrecker when a vehicle struck the officer.

“At this time, it’s believed the driver didn’t see the officer,” commented Green. “The driver stopped and investigators are in the process of questioning the driver.”

Cox was transported to Helena Regional Medical Center and was later airlifted to a Memphis hospital.

Green added that the Arkansas State Police has been called in to investigate the accident.

Additional information, says Green, will be reported as it becomes available.
