Mayor Bill Luckett of Clarksdale, Mississippi and Mayor Jay Hollowell of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, Friday announced a formal sister city relationship between the two Mississippi River Delta cities, effective immediately. The two cities share a common Mississippi River Delta heritage and culture, as well as challenges, and are only separated by a short drive and a quick crossing over the Mississippi River.

Mayor Bill Luckett of Clarksdale, Mississippi and Mayor Jay Hollowell of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, Friday announced a formal sister city relationship between the two Mississippi River Delta cities, effective immediately.   The two cities share a common Mississippi River Delta heritage and culture, as well as challenges, and are only separated by a short drive and a quick crossing over the Mississippi River.  

Both mayors are looking forward to the benefits cooperation between the two cities will bring to the area.  

"Certainly, our joining forces with Clarksdale will bring more tourists to our Delta area, which will be a boon to both cities economically," stated Mayor Hollowell of Helena-West Helena. "Additionally, as we move forward with our sister city relationship, I believe that a strong partnership with Clarksdale will give us additional power to make positive changes in other areas, with other issues, in our Delta region."

Mayor Luckett of Clarksdale concurs, "Life in the Delta has many wonderful aspects.  Teaming up with Helena-West Helena as a sister city will allow us to share more frequently the unique atmosphere that is the Mississippi River Delta with folks from all over the world, while at the same time supporting our existing local businesses and the economy of the entire area.  Our coalition makes sense in lots of ways."

The first formal endeavor between the two cities, under the agreement, will be a Clarksdale – Helena- West Helena joint celebration of Delta culture - arts, food, and music for local residents, residents of other areas in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee, and those around the world who have an interest in the authentic Mississippi River Delta way of life.

This celebration, Delta Road Trip will be held on October 2 and 3 in both cities, with transportation provided between the cities. Clarksdale's annual Mississippi Delta Tennessee Williams Festival will be a literary event in Clarksdale during the celebration.  Both Clarksdale and Helena are part of the Americana Music Triangle. 

Online ticket sales for the Delta Road Trip will begin after July 15.  The website for the event will be deltaroadtrip.com and will also be live after July 15.
