Funeral services for Lugene Smith will be Saturday, July 23 at 2 p.m. at the Allen Temple AME Church. Burial will be at Oakgrove No. 3 Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, July 22 in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m.
Lugene Smith of Helena-West Helena went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 15, 2011.
Lugene Smith was born Aug. 25,1941 in Tunica, Miss. to the late Minnie Pearl Jones. He was adopted and raised by the late John Henry and Beatrice Smith at a young age. He was the second oldest of seven children. Lugene Smith confessed a hope in Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Church in Tunica. He later joined Allen Temple AME Church where he served as a steward.
He was employed by Riceland Foods for 16 ½ years, where he served as an assistant manager. He later worked at Helena Country Club until his health failed.
Lugene was joined in holy matrimony in 1962 to Christine Woodley and to this union two sons were born.
Lugene was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Pearlie Mae Newbern, and a brother, Arlee Burdett.
Lugene leaves to cherish his precious memory, his beloved wife, Christine Smith of Helena-West Helena; two sons, Christopher Smith of Helena-West Helena and Fredrick Smith, of Columbus, Ga.; four grandchildren, Keyonta West, Keyairra, Keyunna and Keyshun Smith all of Memphis; two brothers, Percy Harris and Willy Jones of Memphis; two sisters, Minnie B. Tate and Lillie Mae (Willie) McIntire of Memphis; three stepsisters, Charlene Jones, Roberta Thomas and Luerine Jones of Memphis; two aunts, Willie Mae Williams and Carrie Lee Garrett of Chicago; three sister-in-laws, Jewelette Burdett, Lake Village, Dorothy Woodley and Pearlie Mae Allen of Kansas City, Mo.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
