Funeral services for Winona Barnes, 80, of Helena-West Helena will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30 at the First Baptist Church in Helena-West Helena. Burial will follow in Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Southland. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church.
Barnes was born April 5, 1920 to Rev. and Mrs. Tilton and Lueida Brady. She was the first-born. In 1943, she married Johnnie Barnes, who preceded her in death in May 1994. To this union, one child was born, Earnest B. Barnes.
Winona confessed to Christ at an early age and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Aubrey and later joined and became a member of First Baptist Church. After finishing Newsome Training School, she continued her education at Phillips County Community College where she received three certificates of appreciation. She was employed at Pickens Factory as a warehouse worker and did a lot of volunteer work at Points of Light Foundation, the American Red Cross and Westside School.
Winona leaves a legacy of love and strength as well as inspiring memories to be cherished by her only child, Earnest; daughter-in-law, Rosie; two brothers, Arthur and J.D. Brady; four grandchildren, Tony, Sheldric, Iva, Jiywaune; three great grandchildren, Kelly, Antoinette, Anthony; a great-great-grandchild Hayden, all live in Illinois and Arkansas; and a host of nephews, nieces, in- laws and friends across the world.
