Funeral services for Sammie "Pop" Grant, 87, of Helena-West Helena, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16 in Kincaid Funeral Services Auditorium. Rev. Artis James will officiate. Burial will follow in the Morning Star Cemetery in Elaine. Visitation is tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kincaid Funeral Services.
Sammie Morris Grant was born Aug. 8, 1923 to the late George and Cardine Liddell Grant in Batesville, Miss. He was the fifth of 10 children. He served in World War II from 1944 to 1946. When discharged he met and married the late Annie Mae Christian and to this union six children were born. He worked as a farmer until retirement.
Sammie Grant, confessed a hope in Christ at an early age, and departed this life on Oct. 9, 2010 at his home in Helena-West Helena. Sammie "Pop" Grant was the last of his siblings. He was preceded in death by both parents, his first wife and mother of his children, Annie Mae Grant; two sons, Robert Lee and A.T. Grant; sisters, Georgia Mae Neal, Elsira Campbell, Arquiver Ewing, Annie B. Hailey; brothers, A.T. Grant, Ural Liddell Grant, Alolphus Grant, Willie Fred Grant, Hasson A. Grant; and his second wife and mother of his stepchildren, Erma Gibson Grant.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory a son, Willie James Grant of Helena-West Helena; three daughters, Arquilla Grant of Helena-West Helena; Azorie Cooper of Virginia Beach, Va.; Joyce (Thomas) Brown of Rosedale, Miss.; his stepchildren, Levora (Nathaniel) Carlton of Georgia, Mae Ethington of Elyria, Betty Gibson of Queens, N.Y., Vileara (Willie Earl) Jordan of Pine Bluff, Sandra (Jerry) Henry of Helena-West Helena, Tresha Gibson of Russellville, Charles (Shirley) Gibson of Antioch, Calif.; a special grandson, Kenneth Sanders; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
