Central Coach Matt Cumming and his Cougars got their first real test of the young season Tuesday when they traveled to Forrest City to take on the Mustangs in a 5A-East doubleheader.
Cummings pointed to Forrest City senior pitcher Barrett Astin who led the Mustangs to their first football conference title in 25 years last fall.
Astin is committed to playing baseball at Arkansas State and has pro scouts keeping a close eye on his progress this season.
Cummings turned to Kyrin Burrell and John Garner to pitch in succession for the Cougars in the doubleheader.
Central, 3-1, traveled to Forrest City shirt-handed, Cummings said.
“We will only have 10 players making the trip because a lot of the guys have gone off for spring break,” Cummings said.
Cummings said the pitching corp is set and the offense is coming around.
Central’s next game will at home next Tuesday against Wynne. The game will start at 4 p.m. at Gene Bearden Stadium.
