Alvin Allen, 20, of Robinsonville, Miss. has been charged with attempted aggravated robbery and possession of a firearm in connection with an attempted holdup of Southern Bancorp’s Sebastian Street branch Friday afternoon.
Helena-West Helena Police Major Ronald Scott said Monday that acting on a tip from a customer who had just left the Southern Bancorp branch at 432 S. Sebastian St., Lt. Cornelius Byrd, Phillips County Sheriff’s deputies James Mayfield and Winston Jackson apprehended Allen shortly before 4 p.m. Friday while the suspect was still inside the bank.
Scott said witnesses told law enforcement officers that a lone black man entered the branch bank at 3:41 p.m. and attempted to enter a security door to the area where the tellers were. Witnesses said the man, whom they believed had a weapon, demanded that a teller put money into a bag.
Scott said several witnesses were able to leave the branch bank while the gunman was inside.
Allen is being held in the Phillips County Jail.
