Police did not release the name of the man, who was shot Monday.
Jacksonville High School was locked down as a safety precaution after police notified school officials of "an incident" in a nearby neighborhood, interim Principal Kathleen Crumby said.
Crumby said students were not allowed to go outside as of about 2:50 p.m. They were later dismissed when security said it was safe to leave the school, she said.
The only students who remained inside after dismissal were those who walk home through the neighborhood where police were working, she said. Some middle school students were among that group, she said.
The high school has 1,047 students in grades 9-12.
