The White House and Arkansas' two U.S. senators say President Barack Obama is recommending a promotion for the current chief deputy U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Arkansas.

News releases from the White House and Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, both D-Ark., said Thursday that Clifton "Chip" Massanelli, currently the district's chief deputy, has been nominated for the top U.S. marshal job in the district.

The senators said Massanelli has been chief deputy since 2006 after rising through the ranks from his initial appointment in 1983 as a deputy marshal. Before that, he served as a patrolman and then a detective for the Pine Bluff Police Department. He obtained a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1980.
