Arkansas' first winner of a Powerball jackpot was from Conway, and he took home $8.3 million of a $25 million prize after taxes and other deductions, state lottery officials said Tuesday.

Harold W. Bailey bought his winning ticket for the Jan. 2 drawing at a Crackerbox in Mayflower. He claimed his winnings Friday.

Bailey took a lump sum payment of $12.2 million instead of 30 annual payments that would have totaled $25 million, officials said. After more than $3 million in federal income taxes and $850,754 in state taxes were deducted, he took home $8,264,462.78.

The lottery didn't provide Bailey's age or mailing address. A recording at a phone number listed as Bailey's said his number had been changed and was not published.

The Jan. 2 drawing produced the first Arkansas winner for the top Powerball prize. Powerball sells tickets in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Arkansas lottery provides money for scholarships and grants to Arkansas residents enrolled in two-year and four-year colleges and universities within the state. Through the end of December, the lottery had generated $29.2 million for scholarships.
