The sentencing hearing for a young West Tennessee man in a plot to assassinate President Barack Obama has been delayed in Jackson.
The Jackson Sun reported federal prosecutors requested the delay and 21-year-old Daniel Cowart’s sentencing has been rescheduled from Thursday to Aug. 13.
Cowart — of Bells, Tenn. — pleaded guilty to eight federal charges in March, but can take back the plea if the sentence is more than 18 years in prison.
Cowart and 19-year-old Paul Schlesselman, of Helena-West Helena, Ark., were charged in October 2008 with plotting a robbery and killing spree across several states, ending with the assassination of then- candidate Obama.
Schlesselman is serving a 10-year prison term on his guilty plea.
Federal investigators say Cowart and Schlesselman are white supremacist skinheads.
