Anthony Tyrone Stayton sank a birdie on the second sudden death hole catapulting him and his partner Walter Simpson to the Charlie Miles Memorial Golf Tournament championship Sunday evening.
Stayton and Simpson finished regulation play tied with Dr. Norman Bryant and his son John Norman Bryant with 36-hole scores of 135.
Both teams birdied the first playoff hole. Stayton’s tee shot on the second sudden death hole brought him closest to the pin. John Norman Bryant had the best shot at keeping the Bryants even but his putt slipped by the hole. Stayton proceeded to sink his putt for the birdie and the championship.
Dr. Bryant congratulated Simpson and Stayton stating that both teams had played “great games.”
Simpson, the long-time coach and educator with the Helena-West Helena School District, said he has played in so many tournaments over the years that he couldn’t recount the number of events he  won.
Stayton is employed by Entergy and has been Simpson’s partner for some time now.
Jerry Donaldson and Anthony Pringle won the first flight with a 36-hole score of 145.
They were actually tied with the team of Dale Chisnall and Roy Bridges with exact scores of 74 and 71 on the Saturday and Sunday rounds.
A comparison of the cards decided the win for Donaldson and Pringle.
The wife and husband team of Carolyn and Tommy Brown captured the second flight with a two-day score of 160.
The tournament is played annually in June at the Helena-West Helena Municipal Golf Course in memory of the late Charlie Miles who managed the facility.
His widow Phyllis Miles has managed the course for several years.
Cash prizes were awarded to the top three teams in each flight.
