The annual DeSoto Lake River Classic, set for June 7, has drawn anglers from several states since its inception a quarter of a century ago and this year’s event should be no exception, Billy Hopkins, one of the organizers, said Thursday.
“It’s been going on for at least 25 years,” Hopkins said. “It started small and has continued to draw a lot of fishermen from Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee.”
Some have driven even farther distances from other neighboring states for the first major bass tournament of the summer season.
Hopkins said if the tournament draws a “full field” there would be 100 two-person boats. “We should get to 70 to 100 boats.”
There is an entry fee per boat payable by Thursday, June 4 at the Coahoma County Farm Bureau office, 138 Sunflower Ave., Clarksdale. A dinner for fishermen and others who will participate in the tournament in one role or another will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at Shrine Club located off Mississippi 322 just west of Clarksdale.
Fishing will begin at daybreak June 7. Boats depart from Hillhouse Landing on DeSoto Lake three miles south of Rena Lara off Mississippi Highway 1. The weigh-in will be 3 p.m. All catches will be returned to Desoto Lake following the weigh-in.
Grand prize is $10,000. Asked what the largest bass ever caught during the tournament, Hopkins said: “I don’t remember that. The largest string (of five fish) was 27 pounds.
