Jamborees served two purposes. They give coaches a little more insight to their teams’ assets and weaknesses. They give their fans a peak at the forthcoming season.
DeSoto Athletc Director Bill Beck and his Marvell Academy counterpart, Greg Bigham, used Friday night’s jamboree at Sam Howe Field to watch their teams under game-like conditions.
They concurred that Tunica Institute of Learning will be the likely frontrunner in District 1A.
DeSoto and Tunica fought to a 6-6 tie. Paden Phillips saved the Thunderbirds when he deflected a pass near the DeSoto end zone on the closing play of the game.
Players got a bit testy after the game indicative of the kind of competitiveness the Thunderbirds and Blue Devils will show all year.
Bigham said senior quarterback Scottie Patton directed the Eagles attack well as they put way Marianna Lee and battled Tunica from the get-go. Beck singled out DeSoto senior Dylan Cruz as the pre-season choice for top player.
DeSoto is the defending North Mississippi champion.
