Despite breaking a bone in his left foot Sunday, Arkansas sophomore forward Marshawn Powell should be practicing with the Razorbacks when they officially start basketball practices Oct. 15.
Powell injured his left foot during a pickup game while at home in Newport News, Va.
He flew Monday to Fayetteville and then was examined by Razorbacks team doctors.
According to a Tuesday UA press release, doctors believe surgery is not required and the bone “should heal properly on its own.”
They expect Powell to resume athletic activity within “seven to eight weeks.” Powell was Arkansas’s leading rebounder (6.7) and third-leading scorer (14.9) as a precocious freshman last season for coach John Pelphrey’s Razorbacks. The 6-7 forward must shoulder an even bigger big man load this upcoming season with 6-9 senior 4-year letterman Michael Washington graduated. “Marshawn is a big part of our program,” Pelphrey said. “We are looking forward to him being as good as he was a year ago. Injuries are a part of the game and he suffered this while playing. We have the best staff in the country to help him return to the court and I don’t anticipate this affecting his season.” Last season Powell was named third-team Freshman All-America by Rivals.com and was one of four unanimous first-team freshman All-SEC players by the league coaches. Over the summer, Powell participated in a pair of elite camps for college players including the Kevin Durrant and LeBron James Skills Academies.
This marks the second straight season for Powell to enter preseason off an injury. He broke his left hand in a 2009 summer pickup game and it healed in time for him to practice last October.
