Matt Cummings spent the 2009 season – his first as Central’s baseball coach – teaching the fundamentals of the game to his players.
It was a very long, frustrating year for Cummings and his Cougars who finished a second straight winless season.
“I had a lot of guys (in 2009) who didn’t have a lot of the fundamentals,” Cummings said Tuesday.
Cummings figured this season had to be better. He was pleased more for his players than himself when Central defeated Little Rock J.A. Fair, 13-2, last week for the Cougars’ first win since 2007.
“We’re getting beyond the fundamentals,” Cummings said. “I’m teaching them how to be baseball smart.”
Cummings picked up three players – DeAngelo Pittard, Aaron Montegue and Darrius Watson – when this season started. They are showing signs of being good additions.
Central was scheduled to face Fair Tuesday at Little Rock provided the field was in good shape after showers swept across Arkansas Monday night.
Cummings will test his Cougars against the Clarksdale (Miss.) Wildcats in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday at Gene Bearden Stadium.
Cummings, a graduate of Delta State University, still resides at Clarksdale.
His assistant coaches came to Central as part of the Teach For America program. Stephen Callen, a St. Louis native and a biology teacher, is working with the infielders. Eric Laven, a Chicagoan who teaches civics, is the pitching coach.
Anterio Sloan, who is still assessing his collegiate fuure in football, and has yet to sign with a school, is the best all-around player.
