Baseball season is under way although the weather seems more like conditions for football as area teams break out of the doldrums of winter.
After a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Clarksdale (Miss.) Lee Academy Wednesday, DeSoto faces Marianna Lee Academy at 3:30 p.m. today as the host of a pre-season tournament.
Damion Herron, who moved over to DeSoto this year after the football coach at Eliza Miller Junior High in 2008-2009, said Thursday he saw some pros and cons despite the shutout loss in the matchup of the Class A Thunderbirds and AAA Colts.
“We made some mental errors in the field that cost of us some runs,” Herron said. “We played fairly good for our first game.”
Senior Cody Manning allowed two earned runs in a starting role. Dillon Wiggins came on in relief.
Herron said his lineup is not set yet although he has seven seniors on the roster..
The Thunderbirds will face Tunica Academy 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the conclusion of the round robin tournament.
DeSoto travels to Drew, Miss. 4 p.m. Monday to take on North Sunflower Academy in a non-conference game.
The Thunderbirds will cross the Mississippi River a second time next week when they face Clarksdale Lee Academy 4 p.m. Thursday on the Colts’ diamond.
The Thunderbirds will open their District 1 conference schedule next Friday at home against the Tunica Academy Blue Devils in a 3:30 p.m. game.
