Sports Ramblins': Marvell Academy, DeSoto at home for 2010 openers

In a sense DeSoto and Marvell Academy are like embassies on foreign soil.
While the schools are located in Phillips County they operate under the authority of the Mississippi Association of Private Schools out of Jackson.
The students returned to the classrooms last week for the start of the 2010-2011 year while those in the public schools returned Thursday.
The football season gets under way tonight with DeSoto and Marvell Academy playing at home.
The Thunderbirds will face Strider Academy of Charleston, Miss. at Sam Howe Field.
Meanwhile, the Eagles will face West Memphis Christian at Fletcher Field.
Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Barton, Central and Marvell won’t play their season openers until the first week of September.
Barton travels to DeWitt to take on the Dragons on Sept. 3.
Barton Superintendent Tom Wilson’s last stop was at DeWitt before he was hired in 2009.
Central jump starts with a Sept 2 game against Rogers Heritage in Don Reynolds-Razorback Stadium at Fayetteville.
Forty-eight hours later the Arkansas Razorbacks will open their season there against Tennessee Tech.
In other Sept. 3 games, Marvell will travel to Lake Village , Hughes, under Helena-native Mike Gregory will host McCrory.
Barton will scrimmage tonight. Admission is washing powder or Gatorade. The Bears travel to Des Arc Tuesday for a scrimmage.
Central will travel to Little Rock McClellan Tuesday for a jamboree with other teams.
