Down by 14 points going into the fourth quarter against Strider Academy, the DeSoto Lady Thunderbirds came oh so close to winning only to watch victory slip away, 49-48, against the Lady Rams in the opening round of the North Mississippi State Tournament Wednesday.
Strider moved to today’s 1 p..m. game against No 1 seed and host Marvell Academy while the 2009-2010 season came to a close for the Lady T-Birds.
Strider, 17-7, of Charleston, Miss. was deadly from three-point range, hitting the mark seven times in the game. Those 21 points meant the difference in a contest that otherwise could have gone DeSoto’s way.
Senior Micah Wilson led the Lady Thunderbirds with 21 points finding the range from outside or from underneath the basket.
Trailing, 42-28, going in the final period, Wilson and Amy VonKanel sparked a crowd-pleasing comeback that enabled the Lady Thunderbirds to grab a 48-47 lead with 29 seconds to play.
Strider responded with a basket with 11 seconds to regain the lead with what proved to be the winning score.
There was some discrepancy about the time remaining as DeSoto coach Melissa Beck called time to set up for a possible winning bucket.
After the scorekeeper set the time at 8.6 seconds the Strider coach contested and a referee told the scorekeeper to reset the time at 8 seconds.
Beck called time again with 3.8 seconds left to help her girls maintain their composure for a final shot.
An arched shot missed the rim and a Strider player seized the ball as time expired. Both Strider and DeSoto made their share of turnovers and timely steals as well.
DeSoto fell behind, 16-7, after the first period. VonKanel hit a basket and a free throw with 17.7 seconds in the half to narrow Desoto’s deficit at 25-27.
DeSoto showed more determination early on in the third period but Strider’s deadly three-point shooting enabled the Lady Rams to push the margin to 42-28 at the close of the period.
A steal by Dixie Quinn was a key play that helped DeSoto get back into the game. The game was tied twice, 42-all with 4:38 in the game and 47-all with 1:03 to play.
