Funeral services for Lena Mae Bridewell Jones, 82, of Poplar Grove will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept.11, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Helena-West Helena. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Jackson and Highley Funeral Home.
Jones, born April 1927 to Walter Bridewell and Willie Mae Blakely Bridewell in Helena, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009.
Lena confessed a hope in Christ as her savior at an early age at the St. Mary’s No.1 Church in Helena, where she also received her early education in the Oneida School System.
She was a member of Beautiful Zion, Morning Star churches before her present membership at First Baptist Church of Poplar Grove, where she served in various capacities including choir, youth leader and the Mother’s Board.
She possessed fine skills in dressmaking and alterations and loved to garden.
Lena married Charlie Jones Sr. in 1945 and four children were born to their union. Roy Lee and Clyde Jones preceded her in death, as did her parents and three brothers, Roosevelt, Walter Jr. and Theodis and five sisters, Minnie Ester, Joanna, Erma Lean, Ethel Lou and Sarah Robinson.
She leaves her husband of 64 years, Charlie Jones Sr.; a daughter, Maylene Jones-Smith; a son, Charlie Jones Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Jones; a sister, Mamie Bridewell; an aunt, Alice Green; five grandchildren, Audrey Michelle Smith Hayes, Martin Smith, Cordella Blakely Jones, Victoria Denise Jones and Audrey Jones; three great grandchildren, Morgan C. Green, Marc Anthony Daniel Smith and Nathan M. Hayes; a special cousin, Gloria Bridewell Boose; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, friends, sisters and brothers in Christ.
Jackson and Highley Funeral Home will direct services.
