Wiley Laverne “Mack” Self, 81, of Helena-West Helena died Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at his home. Mr. Self was born May 22, 1930 at Calico Bottoms to the late Wiley David and Annie Mae Mathis Self. Mack was a well- known singer, songwriter, Sun recording artist, and a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
He leaves his wife of 52 years, Hazel Self of Helena-West Helena; two sons, Jerry Self (Pat) of Marvell, and Vince Self (Beth) of Helena-West Helena; four daughters, Darla Clark (Chaffin) of Rose Bud, Skeeter Gentry (Millard) of Helena-West Helena, Dawn Self Mosley of Helena-West Helena, and Tammy Baker (Larry, Jr.) of Shelbyville, Ky.; 1 4 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Vera Barnett of Helena and Tommy Gail Pearson (Sipp) of Lexa.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Newsome and two brothers, Joe and Billy Self.
Funeral services for Wiley Lavern “Mack” Self will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Moro. Burial will follow at Caldwell Family Cemetery in Aubrey. Bill Stroud and Rev. Ben Fisher will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (Friday) at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Chaffin Clark, Larry Baker, Jr., Millard Gentry, Jesse Hungarland, Aaron Shirley and Skeet Seaton.
Honorary pallbearers are C.W. Gatlin, Benny Adler, Ralph Jones and Troy Seaton.
