A Gurdon High School sophomore has died after collapsing during football practice.

The student is identified as 15-year-old Montel Williams. Gurdon Superintendent Allen Blackwell says he collapsed after practicing for less than an hour and a half Tuesday night.

Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson tells The Associated Press that an ambulance was called at about 8:40 p.m.

Williams was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center in Arkadelphia, about 15 miles north of Gurdon. He was pronounced dead just before 10 p.m.

Watson says authorities don't know yet whether the death is heat-related. An autopsy was planned for Wednesday.

Blackwell said no athletic trainers were on hand at practice. He says coaches have undergone heat-related training and started practice as late as possible due to the heat.
