City Attorney Chalk Mitchell informed the Helena-West Helena City Council Tuesday night that he has developed a revised ordinance dealing with city workers selling their vacation time. However, the council agreed to table the issue until February.
“The only thing that has changed is the portion of the policy that deals with the selling of vacation,” stated Mitchell. “I purpose that the selling of vacation days not be permitted by any city employee under any circumstances period.”
Councilman Marvin Jarrett suggested basing the number of days of vacation allotted on the number of years of employment.
“For example, if you worked 1 to 9 years than you would receive 2 weeks of vacation pay, and if you have worked for the city for 10 years or more you would be granted an additional week to your vacation time,” stated Jarrett.
Councilman Joe St. Columbia questioned the previous policy, which allotted a fourth week, and asked Jarrett if he was proposing to dismiss the fourth week all together.
Councilman Don Etherly requested the cost of vacation, saying, “I don’t think I could be persuaded otherwise on this issue until there is something to go on.” “We have begun the new year in hopes that we would be able to provide raises to our employees, however at this moment in time, we cannot afford to do so,” commented Mayor Arnell Willis.
Etherly asked for the total cost of vacation time to the budget be provided to the council by the next meeting.
