Two Helena-West Helena residents face multiple drug-related charges after one of them led police on a chase all over town. According to police reports, when officers finally stopped the vehicle, the driver allegedly attacked a police officer. The incident occurred Tuesday night.
Officer Cortez Bowers was traveling west on East Park Street when he noticed a vehicle traveling east on Park Street at a high rate of speed. Bowers clocked the driver on radar at 52 miles per hour in a 35 mph residential area.
The driver, identified as Sandy Williams, stopped momentarily but when the Bowers approached his vehicle, he sped away.
Bowers proceeded to give chase, which went through several areas of town and through several alleys. Williams backed into the patrol unit, damaging the front grill and brush guard on the car.
Williams got out of his vehicle and ran toward the back of a residence at 320 South Fifth St. Bowers finally caught the suspect at the back of the residence. Bowers grabbed Williams’ shirt and they both tumbled to the ground.
When Bowers hit the ground his face was slammed against his portable radio causing injuries. He struggled with the driver trying to get him into handcuffs. He kept resisting and swinging at the officer.
During the scuffle, Williams’, reported girlfriend Sharonda Henderson came out of the house and began yelling, “Get off my man he ain’t did nothing.”
Bowers reported that he kept trying to get the woman to back away.
When backup officers arrived they searched the woman and allegedly discovered a bundle with a leafy green substance that appeared to be marijuana and a white substance that appeared to be crack cocaine.
As a result of the altercation, Williams, 20, was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and fleeing.
Henderson, 26, was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, interfering with law enforcement officers, threatening physical force and resisting arrest.
