A Marvell man and a Helena-West Helena man face drug-related charges after state police allegedly discovered drugs in the two motorists’ vehicles during routine traffic stops on Jan. 28.
Shalamar Simms, 27, of 703 Quarles Lane in Marvell was charged with possession of a controlled substance, littering and fleeing, after State Trooper Walt McCord stopped him. The trooper reportedly saw someone throw a clear baggie out the passenger window of the car that Simms was driving north on Quarles Lane.
Trooper McCord retrieved the bag, which field-tested positive for cocaine.
When McCord finally got Simms to stop, the passenger jumped out of the car and fled the scene on foot.
Simms total bond for all three charges was set at $51,500.
In the other arrest, Tyree Wortham, 24, of 122 Center Street in Helena-West Helena was arrested later the same day. He has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, cocaine.
When McCord stopped the vehicle Wortham was driving at the corner of Second and Sebastian streets he noticed that his eyes were glassy and his speech was slurred.
After McCord received consent to search the vehicle he observed a leafy green substance, which appeared to be marijuana on the floorboard of the car. While questioning Wortham, McCord noticed that the suspect kept trying to place something in the back of his pants, which turned out to be a clear plastic bag containing a white powder-like substance that field tested positive for cocaine.
Wortham’s bond was set at $10,000.
