BREAKING NEWS: Carjacker persued by police; suspect apprehended after foot chase

Helena-West Helena Police Officers and the Phillips County Sheriff's department are on the scene of a carjacking that occurred earlier today. Officers gave chase across town before the suspect cashed the automobile then fled on foot. The police were able to apprehend the man.

A woman was carjacked at the Circle N Exxon on Highway 49 earlier today.  Police were able to catch a black male in his late 20s to mid 30s after a car and foot chase. Police are not releasing the suspects name pending charges.
Helena-West Helena Police Sgt. Terry Newsome, reported from the scene that after the initial carjacking, he saw the woman's vehicle at Oakland and Hickory Hill where he gave chase. 
The suspect fled down Oakland to Sulpher Springs Road.  Newsome said he requested backup at Perry St. where the suspect continued fleeing down Porter, Walnut and Missouri streets and back up to Columbia St., where the suspect crashed the car near St. Mary's Catholic Church on the property where Burger World sits.
Newsome said the suspect ditched the car and fled on foot.  Newsome gave chase as other officers responding to the carjacking also chased the fleeing suspect on foot and finally caught the suspect. 
According to reports, the woman was not seriously injured.
