According to Helena-West Helena Police reports, three schools in the Helena-West Helena School District have been victim of break-ins and thefts. The Helena-West Helena Police Department is investigating the incidents.
On March 11, Sgt. Terry Newsome was dispatched to Beechcrest Elementary in response to a break-in. When Newsome arrived at the scene he noted that four dead-bolted doors were intact and could find no point of entry. Four rooms were searched and Newsome noted that all the windows in the rooms had been smashed with bricks.
A Dell computer was taken and later found outside the building. An employee at the school called the department again the same day to report that four cell phones belonging to the school district were missing.
On March 23, the school’s janitor called officers back to the school. The janitor said that when he arrived at 6:25 a.m. he discovered that a break-in had occurred.
The janitor reported that a school activity had been held that weekend.
Capt. Carl Vann and Cpl. Ben Casarez investigated and found heavy damage to the school.
According to the reports, several classrooms were damaged. An unknown amount of computers, headphones and equipment were stolen. Among the damaged items were 18 classrooms, including the library. All had windows broken out and were thoroughly ransacked. The Criminal Investigation Division is continuing their investigation.
The STARS Academy also was a target of thieves during the same period.
On March 17, Newsome and Officer Tundry Wallace responded to an alarm at the school. When they arrived, officers discovered footprints and an open window. The officers found substantial damage to some equipment. Wires were cut off various computers and headphones.
The thefts and break-ins are still under investigation. Police have not said whether or not the incidents are related.
