At approximately 3:10 a.m. Monday, the Helena - West Helena Police Department was contacted with a report of a disturbance at the Sands Motel, according to Bill Sadler, public information officer for the Arkansas State Police.  The initial caller reported that gunfire was heard outside the motel.
Upon arrival of local officers, an individual, later identified as William A. Smith, 54, of Phillips County, was seen running into a motel room.  From inside the room, Smith is alleged to have fired a gun at police.  The officers reportedly returned fire and hit Smith, who was hiding inside the bathroom.
The ASP Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an investigation of the incident and will submit its findings to the prosecuting attorney for consideration.
