As of July 10, Phillips County middle school science teachers in grades 5-8 in Phillips County can go to www.donorschoose.org/SIMS to apply for grants through Arkansas Community Foundation’s Science Initiative for Middle Schools (SIMS) program. Deadline for applications is Sept. 15.
The SIMS program encourages hands-on science instruction by making grants for the purchase of materials for science experiments. Proposed projects must meet the State Science Curriculum Framework, and the cost of project materials must not exceed $500. Up to 300 SIMS grants will be selected from the proposals submitted in counties served by one of Arkansas Community Foundation’s 27 local offices, including the Phillips County Community Foundation.
All applications will be managed through a streamlined online process at DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit website that helps public school teachers find funding for classroom projects. Applicants simply complete an online profile at www.DonorsChoose.org/SIMS, write a description of the project for which they are requesting materials and select the materials they need. A local committee from Phillips County Community Foundation will review proposals from teachers in our area. DonorsChoose.org will ship all requested materials directly to the teachers whose proposals are selected.
“This is an opportunity for the science teachers to receive assistance in purchasing consumable science materials for their classes,” said Crystal Eastman, Phillips County Executive Director. “The ARCF offers such grants to help improve classroom experience and level of learning for our state’s students.”
Annual funding for this program is made possible by an endowed gift to ARCF from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation. For more information about the SIMS program, visit arcf.org.
