Dr. Tom Kimbrell, commissioner of the Arkansas Department of Education, has met with the Helena-West Helena School District administration several times after a $1.6 million budget miscalculation was discovered.
Julie Johnson-Thompson, communications director for the ADE, stated Monday that the school district was directed to hold off on any construction expenditures until the budget gets fixed.  The department has not approved the 2009-2010 Helena-West Helena School District budget.
“It’s a collaborative effort,” she said as the ADE comes and goes in and out of the administration offices to help direct the district to a satisfactory budget.
Thompson said Kimbrell is set to attend the Nov. 10 meeting of the Helena-West Helena School Board.
Thompson said that at the moment the district is in no danger of another state take-over.
“They’ve not reached the point where they’d be in take over status,” replied Thompson.
