The Marvell Academy Eagles knocked off the DeSoto Thunderbirds 56-38 Friday September 28, 2018 at Sam Howe Field.

“It was an amazing environment at Sam Howe Field,” said Marvell Academy Head Football Coach Ben Durham. “The crowd was so loud the kids had trouble hearing the snap count.”

“We came into the game wanting to be balanced but we were able to run the ball,” said Durham.

Eagles quarterback Owen Bartlett rushed for 306 yards on 14 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Marvell Academy.

Layton Newsom gained 103 yards on seven carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, while Samuel Hall carried four times for 98 yards. Mathew Hall carried one time for 22 yards and a touchdown.

“They have an extremely physical offensive line and they controlled the line of scrimmage,” said Durham.

The Eagles Nate Dunavan recorded eight tackles, while Garret Foran and Mathew Hall made five tackles each.

Jaden Patterson and Jagger King had six tackles apiece, while Owen Bartlett made seven tackles. Layton Newsom pulled down one interception.

“Own Bartlett really showed his explosiveness,” said Durham. “Hopefully, we can get the defense and passing game back on track to compete for a District Championship.”
