HELENA-WEST HELENA- Helena-West Helena Central fell behind early but stormed back to defeat the Earle Bulldogs 38-18 at Cad Polk Stadium.
Earle struck paydirt early by taking the opening possession 64-yards on 14 plays, highlighted by a conversion of a 4th and 13., Tavarius Thomas scored from 2-yards out with 5:26 to go in the first quarter. The try for two failed and Earle led 6-0.
The Cougars responded on the first possession of the second quarter. John Oliver scored on a 2-yard run to cap off a 7-play, 52-yard drive. Kylaun Anderson ran in the two-point conversion to put the Cougars in front for good at 8-6 with 9:07 to go in the first half.
After forcing the Bulldogs to punt on the ensuing possession, Helena-West Helena went 57-yards on six plays. Armonie Calhoun scored on a 4-yard run and Yarvarious Frazier ran in the two-point conversion to push the score to 16-6 with 3:13 to go in the first half.
After forcing Earle to punt again with 0:48 to go in the first half, Earle got a break when the Cougars muffed the punt and the Bulldogs scooped it up and scored to make the score 16-12 at the intermission.
Helena-West Helena dominated the second half, coming out of the locker room and rushing for 97 yards on 11 plays. Calhoun scored on a 31-yard run. The try for two was good and the Cougars led 24-12 with 6:42 to go in the third quarter.
After Earle punted on the next possession, the Cougars went 64 yards on five plays. Calhoun hit Ahmaud Jones for a 34-yard touchdown pass. Demarcus Sheard ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 32-12.
Each team scored once in the final stanza. Calhoun tossed a scoring strike to Kendric Smith from 17 yards away with 2:31 left and Earle got a 76-yard with 1:16 left to end the scoring.
