The Helena-West Helena Police Department responded to a late evening burglary call at the Dollar Store in Helena.

Officer responded with the K-9 Unit and found clothing worn by the suspect, matching the suspect description.

Immediately after the burglary occurred, a Dollar Store employee locked the door, to prevent anyone from leaving until the police arrived.

A male suspect was found in the store, matching the burglary suspect’s description, in the store’s restroom. He was questioned and searched before being placed under arrest.

The suspect had a warrant out of Tunica, Mississippi and was in possession of a pistol and drugs. He was transported to the Helena-West Helena Police Department for processing.

While HWH police officers on duty were responding to the call, an off duty, non-authorized officer, crashed into police units that had blocked the streets during the burglary response, with a personal vehicle causing extensive damage to two of the units involved.

All officers involved were taken to Helena Regional, checked out and released with no serious injuries.

The off duty officer has been placed on administrative leave, while the State Police investigate this incident.
