Kevin A. Smith, former state senator and a co-owner of Smith Insurance Agency, announced plans to run for Mayor of Helena-West Helena, Arkansas in the November, 2018 election.

“Today, I announce for Mayor of Helena-West Helena, not to run against any candidate, but to offer voters a positive choice for change. We need to fix what is broken with our local government, and we need to refocus our city on the more important issues like jobs, safe neighborhoods, clean streets, better roads, and so much more,” Smith said. “We can do these and the other things, but we need to elect new leadership with a record of accomplishment and the desire to do the hard work to get us there.”

Smith represented nine counties in the Arkansas Senate, including Phillips County, until term limited after serving ten years. He was Chairman of the Legislative Joint Audit Committee and chaired the subcommittee overseeing city government financial audits and reports. Smith worked for then-Governor Bill Clinton (D-AR) at the staff level on issues facing the Delta Region, and for over four years served on the staff of then-US Senator Dale Bumpers (D-AR) in Washington, D.C..

Smith is a native and resident of Helena-West Helena and is married to Virginia (Sissy) Smith, a teacher at KIPP Elementary. They have four children and attend St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Smith is a 1980 graduate of Helena-West Helena Central High School, attended Arkansas State University, and graduated with a BA from George Washington University. He is the son of former Helena Mayor Joann D. Smith and LeVaughn A. Smith.

In coming weeks, Smith said, he will be on a listening tour of the community, volunteering for various community-based programs, and will spend the night with citizens in some of the most dangerous neighborhoods. He plans to release a more detailed platform of priorities and specifics dealing with jobs, crime, infrastructure, tourism, and animal control, along with his vision to work with city government to accomplish these and other important issues.
