National Bubba Day. Donald Duck Day. World Sauntering Day. Flip a Coin Day. Did you know that all of these special days are in the month of June. And, this is just a sampling!

The list of holidays, special and wacky observances is long. The most popular, and most recognized for June, are Father’s Day, Juneteenth, and Flag Day. Most of us are familiar with these three days, but it’s fun to take a look at some of the others on the list.

For the most part there is no indication of the origins of these so-called “special” days. But, some actually do have a reason for being. Take June 9 – Donald Duck Day. It was June 9, 1934 when Walt Disney’s Donald Duck made his cartoon debut. By the way, here’s a great trivia question for you - Do you know Donald’s middle name? (Did you know he HAD a middle name?) Well, he does. It’s Fauntleroy.

Here’s an example for my tea drinking friends. June 10 is National Iced Tea Day. The story is that in 1904, English tea plantation owner Richard Blechynden set up a booth to sell hot tea at the St. Louis World’s Fair. It was a sizzler of a day, and fair visitors didn't want anything hot. Rather, they needed something to quench their thirst... something cold. He dumped some of his hot tea into ice and served it cold. It was an immediate hit. This was the first known use of iced tea.

There are three days in June that I believe would benefit all of us. The first is Smile Power Day – June 15. We all know the power that a smile has. It’s documented. It can make you a happier person. It can make someone else a happier person. It’s a mood changer for the giver and receiver. And, it takes very little effort.

June 26 is Forgiveness Day. It’s a day of realizing the healing power of forgiving and being forgiven. Everyone is worthy of forgiveness. Hanging on to anger, hurt and disappointment only weighs us down and makes us bitter individuals. Forgiveness is the key to peace, health and happiness.

Another special day that can only bring joy and happiness is Hug Holiday Day, June 29. It encourages us to give hugs to those who need them. On this day, people go out and give hugs at senior citizen centers, hospitals, and other places. The focus is upon elderly, sick and invalid, lonely people and anyone who needs the warmth, cheer, and love that a hug provides. Who in this world doesn’t love a hug?

The last one is a personal favorite of mine. The Friday after Father’s Day (June 22 this year) is designated as Take Your Dog to Work Day. This is a serious holiday for "Man's Best Friend". It is sponsored by Pet Sitters International. The objective is to recognize the importance of dogs in our lives as both companions and protectors. The organization also encourages others to help homeless dogs. One way to do so is to adopt a dog today!
