In a Helena-West Helena Police Department Press Release Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Jevon Byrd, 18, was arrested in connection with the death of 55 year old Fredrick Lacey. Byrd was charged with Capital Murder, Attempted Aggravated Robbery, and Terroristic Act. He is being held without bond.
At approximately 8:36 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2018, the HWHPD responded to a shots fired call in the area of Garland and 5th Street. Prior to officers arrival, a second call came in of an accident at 431 Anderson.
According to witnesses, Mr. Fredrick Lacey, age 55, was sitting inside his vehicle at a stop sign in the area of Garland and 5th Street, when an unidentified black male, 6’4”, wearing light blue pants and white “Air Force Ones” tennis shoes approached Lacey’s vehicle and fired several rounds at Lacey’s vehicle; striking him multiple times.
After being shot, Lacey drove himself two blocks to 431 Anderson, where he wrecked, his vehicle striking a parked vehicle and a fire hydrant.
Lacey was transported by Pafford to Helena Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead later that evening. HWH Police Officers checked the area and located a person of interested and conducted an interview with that individual.
