Saturday KIPP Delta’s Russell Mitchell traveled to Lake Hamilton High to compete in the Arkansas Athletic Association’s Meet of Champs. The winner of each state classification (1A-7A) in all track events and the remaining best times, jumps, and throws from across the state, regardless of classification, were invited. Each event comprised of the 16 best athletes in Arkansas. Mitchell was invited to compete in the 200 m dash. He clocked a 22.81 that earned him 9th place overall.
“I’m so very proud of this young man” head Coach Tracy Duncan said of Mitchell. “We are going to miss his talents but more importantly we are going to miss him as a person and what he brings to our school and community. He represents KIPP so well wherever we go. Coaches always comment on how respectful and well-mannered he is. He allows his talents and results to do all the talking for him. Russ got down on himself because that’s the slowest time he has ran all season, but if you look at the top 9 times, they were one-tenth and some one-hundredths of a second different that divided them. To have bragging rights as the 9th fastest man in Arkansas at 200 yards is nothing for him to hang his head down about. To achieve the things he has in track with a good majority of his practices coming from running on the grass or in the gym since we don’t have a track, this young man deserves all the accolades that come is way. As a younger child, Russ broke his femur and was told he may not walk. To hear that and to see him now, his grit and determination go unmatched.”
