A long respected leader in education, Suzann McCommon, of Helena-West Helena, is set to deliver this year’s commencement address to the graduates of Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA)-Helena.
Director of Great Rivers Education Service Cooperative, McCommon will address the 2018 graduates during graduation exercises at 7p.m. Friday, May 11, in PCCUA’s Lily Peter Auditorium.
Currently in her 33rd year as Great Rivers Cooperative director, McCommon is responsible for the administration, supervision, and overall operation of the cooperative.
Her extensive background includes employment with the Helena-West Helena Public School District as special education supervisor, where she wrote and helped implement federal and state grants. She also has in-depth experience with Chapter II and vocation education grants in addition to 89-313 and Title VI grants. While employed as special education supervisor, McCommon also served as coordinator of the Gifted and Talented program for the Helena-West Helena Public Schools.
Her professional affiliations include current service on the board of directors for the Helena Health Foundation and Delta House, and the advisory board for Merchants and Farmers Bank, graduation from the Arkansas Academy for Leadership Development, reappointment to the Arkansas Developmental Disabilities Board, and membership in the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, East Arkansas School Masters, and the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators.
Her involvement also includes former service on the executive board of the Arkansas Association of Special Education Administrators, Phillips County Developmental Center Board, Arkansas Developmental Disabilities Board, Arkansas Association of School Administrators Board, membership in the Arkansas Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, and Arkansas Association for Gifted and Talented, and service as director of Area 8 Special Olympics.
McCommon holds a B.S.E. in special education, elementary education, and early childhood education and an M.S.E. in early childhood education from the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. She also carries certification as an elementary principal, special education supervisor, elementary supervisor, and superintendent of schools.
